Russia is a country where real people like me have generations of people shot, starved, imprisoned and hailed. Post-modernist smirk and quirky vintage cartoons make fun stories; history is mangled bodies, mass graves, growing up with no right to speak and dark complexity. It does not rule out optimism and hope but it calls for good insight and respectful contemplation. Satire works, too, but not if it dismisses truth that is hard to digest.
